Lenten Lunch Sermon: Not Too Late

Posted: March 14, 2012 in Lent, Sermons

Background:  This sermon came as part of St. Mark’s Wednesday of hosting Greenwood’s community Lenten Lunch.  It is the first time I’ve had the chance to be a part of this and I really enjoyed it.  The worship service is only about 30 minutes and the sermon is shorter than most.

Text:  Luke 23:30-32, 39-43.  Jesus is on the cross and this portion of the text addresses the two criminals who are crucified alongside Jesus.

Thoughts:  This was a chance to use the story of Mickey Mantle and Bobby Richardson in a sermon (pictured along with Whitey Ford).  How could I resist using a baseball reference?  At the same time, the response of the one criminal stood out — “We are here because we’re guilty.  Jesus isn’t.”  In my mind, I kept coming back to the phrase, “It’s just not fair.”
