Pain is a good thing

“Pain is a good thing because it reminds us that we are alive.”

At least that’s what  my high school track coach said when he summed up what was both one of my best and worst running experiences ever.

I was on the Laurens track team and we traveled to Greenwood for a meet.  For some reason that I really don’t remember, I ended up running the two-mile race that day. Normally, I ran the mile and sometimes the half-mile.

I finished the race and that was a feat in itself.  Halfway through , I started to experience heat exhaustion and somehow managed to finish.

And so in summing up that day, Coach McAllister (who has since left education to serve as a pastor!) made that statement.

It’s something that I think about from time to time and I’ve especially had it on my mind as I’ve moved to be medicine free.  The emotional safety net that the medication became is now gone.  In addition, the “side effect” of being helpful with long-term pain is also gone.

I’m feeling my knee as I run and my shoulder as I pick things up.

And tonight as I was running, and feeling the pain in my knee and my foot, I was reminded of that statement.

Pain can be a good thing.

It reminds me that I’m very much alive.
